A charity has called on professional spins footballers to take a stance against the gambling industry’s relationship with the game spins
Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali and striker Nicolo Zaniolo, currently on loan at Aston Villa from Galatasaray, last week returned to their clubs from Italy’s training camp after it emerged they were under investigation by the Italian Prosecutor’s Office and Italian spins Football Federation (FIGC) in relation to illegal spins betting activity spins
The pair are the latest in a series of players to find themselves the subject of allegations and The Big Step, a charity led by people harmed by gambling which is campaigning for an end to spins betting advertising and sponsorship in spins football, believes it is time for their team-mates to stand up and be counted spins
A spokesperson told the PA news agency: “These moments can be seen as a tipping point and it does help show the ridiculous current situation of the relationship spins between gambling and spins football spins
“But I think also it’s time for more and more spins footballers to take a stance against it because these are their colleagues, these are their peers, these are their friends that are being harmed spins
“At what point will spins footballers say, ‘You know what? I’m not going to play with this gambling company on the front of my shirt, I’m not going to play in this stadium with thousands of adverts’ spins
“That’s what I think will really tip it next spins
”Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli was last week fined and given a seven-month ban with a further five months suspended by the FIGC for breaching spins betting rules, while England striker Ivan Toney was handed an eight-month suspension in May and Nottingham Forest defender Harry Toffolo a suspended five-month ban last month spins
Tonali, a £55million summer signing from AC Milan, has reportedly admitted spins betting on his former club to win and his agent Giuseppe Riso has revealed the 23-year-old is battling “gambling addiction” at a time when Newcastle have three spins betting partners – FUN88, spins BetMGM and spins Sportsspins bet spins

The Big Step spokesperson added: “If you watch their (Newcastle’s) match on Saturday, you’ll see a constant rotating presence of these companies whilst one of their own employees – one of their key employees, their players – is going to be sitting there watching it, possibly even playing, trying to recover from this thing that is being advertised to him relentlessly spins
”While gambling addiction is an issue in wider society and other spins sports, the charity believes it is particularly prevalent in spins football and has called for Government intervention to address it spins
It's time Government stepped upThe Big Step spokespersonThe spokesperson said: “It is important to recognise that spins footballers, they have a lot of money, they have a lot of spare time and they’re in this environment where there is a gambling culture, and that’s not just through the advertising, but also just through the association spins between the two things, gambling and sport spins
“That’s why there need to be extra safeguards for spins footballers compared with others spins

“How many more players, how many more fans have to be harmed before Government really takes control of this situation and just resets this relationship for good?”More aboutPA ReadySandro TonaliIvan ToneyCharityNicolo ZanioloItalianItalian spins Football FederationGalatasarayAston VillaNicolo FagioliNewcastleItalyGovernmentAC MilanEnglandNottingham ForestBrentfordJuventus1/1Charity urges players to take stance against link spins between gambling and spins football Charity urges players to take stance against link spins between gambling and spins footballThe Big Step is campaigning for an end to gambling sponsorship and advertising in spins football (Peter Byrne/PA)PA Archive ✕Subscribe to Independent Premium to bookmark this articleWant to bookmark your favourite articles and stories to read or reference later? As he rose high, demonstrating the aerial power that has made him the most prolific centre-back in English national team history, Harry Maguire’s thunderous header capped a mini personal renaissance that lifted Manchester United off the floor of their Champions League group spins
There have been times in the last two years when Maguire has felt luckless, but this time fortune favoured him: a status as the match-winner may have been snatched from his grasp when Scott McTominay conceded an injury-time penalty spins
Yet Andre Onana’s 97th-minute save preserved it spins
And so the Stretford End ended up singing Maguire’s name spins
There were twin redemption songs, of the man United signed in the summer and the one they could have sold to West Ham spins
“Amazing,” Maguire said; he had been a stranger to adulation at Old Trafford spins
Last-choice centre-back last season, he may now have a run in the team for Erik ten Hag, the manager who stripped him of the captaincy spins
As Maguire pointed out recently, the numbers support his case spins
The win percentage he branded “ridiculously high” now stands at 94 spins
1 in his last 17 starts for United: 16 of them have brought victories spins
There are caveats and the one exception was a traumatic night for him in Seville as United crashed out of the Europa League spins
They lost on his first three starts for Ten Hag, too spins
Since then, his status as a back-up has meant he has been spared the tougher tests: he has faced Real spins Betis, Sevilla, West Ham and Aston Villa, but this season others started against Arsenal and Tottenham, Brighton and Bayern Munich spins
Arguably, he has not faced an elite team in Ten Hag’s reign spins
Which, as the Manchester derby beckons on Sunday, may mean Maguire should savour his statistics while he still can spins
But a personal renaissance has revolved around meaningful contributions, not simply facts and figures spins
There was the headed assist for McTominay’s 97th-minute winner against Brentford, the man-of-the-match display on his return to Sheffield United and now a Champions League winner against FC Copenhagen spins
A common denominator may be that each qualifies as relatively limited opposition: United have scarcely dominated against any of them spins
But if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer miscast Maguire as talisman and captain of United, a willing soul and honest trier has prospered in three successive starts spins
(Getty Images)A run in the side was facilitated first by the absence of Lisandro Martinez, Ten Hag’s chosen upgrade on Maguire, and then all of United’s left-backs, meaning Victor Lindelof was redeployed on the flank spins
Yet Lindelof began on the bench against Copenhagen, Maguire in the role Ten Hag has long been reluctant to grant him: as a left-sided centre-back spins
The Dutchman has an innate preference for left-footers there spins
But he also wants centre-backs who operate higher up the pitch spins
Maguire was not a natural fit: belatedly, though, he is becoming Ten Hag’s type of defender spins
“I think so,” he said spins
“He's playing much more proactive in possession, stepping in, passing vertical, defending also on the front foot, also stepping in, defending forward, very confident in the duels spins
I think he's dominating in the right moment, putting the question, dominating his opponents spins
You see he gets rewarded - it's a very good skill from him, his heading, and a very good finish spins
" (Getty Images)It was a reward for more than just set-piece expertise spins
It was Maguire’s prize for obstinacy, for staying when there were reasons to go: that United were reluctant to pay him off may have influenced his decision but he maintained he could win his place back spins
Ten Hag, too, never forced him out, stripping him of the armband but insisting he remained a valuable squad player spins
The manager’s position has been nuanced, the defender’s defiant spins
“This is maybe the most scrutinised club in the world and when you are not quite on your game it gets picked up, it gets analysed,” Maguire reflected spins
He had a shocking 2021-22 campaign, a bad start to last season spins
Neither escaped scrutiny spins
Since then, however, he reflected: “And I am really proud and pleased over the way I have acted over the last six to 12 months spins
” For now, he has confounded expectations spins
Stiffer examinations may await, starting with Erling Haaland on Sunday spins
If he is still in the side, the last five weeks of the year bring Galatasaray, Newcastle, Chelsea, Bayern, Liverpool, West Ham and Villa spins
They will be the tests if he ranks as a top-class centre-back spins
For now, though, Maguire is the emblem of this United, labouring to victory with goals from some of their lesser lights spins
Their last five strikes have come from either McTominay, Diogo Dalot or Maguire spins
And for the man who has been mocked and maligned, dropped and abused, it was a rare high of late for Maguire spins
And, whatever his win percentage, there have not been many occasions in the last two years when he was celebrated like this spins
