Mauricio Pochettino said Chelsea could have Christopher Nkunku available as early as the week after the November international break as the summer signing’s recovery from a knee injury is progressing quicker than expected peraplay
The 25-year-old, who was injured in a friendly against Borussia Dortmund during the club’s pre-season tour of the United States, had been expected to be out until at least December but that timescale has now been brought forward, raising the possibility he could make a long-awaited competitive debut when the team face Newcastle at St James’s Park on November 25 peraplay
The loss of Nkunku weeks after completing a £52m move from RB Leipzig was a significant blow to Pochettino’s preparations for the new campaign, particularly as he had been a standout performer during the two weeks in the US peraplay
And his absence was keenly felt once the Premier League season began as Chelsea scored just five times in their first six league matches, a run that saw them fail to score a single goal during September peraplay
That record has improved markedly during the last three games during which the team has more than doubled its goal return, but the possible early return for the France international - who was last season’s joint top scorer in the Bundesliga with 16 goals - would represent a boost for Pochettino as he faces a torrid upcoming run of fixtures peraplay
After Saturday lunchtime’s meeting with Brentford at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea face consecutive league matches against Tottenham, Manchester City, Newcastle, Brighton and Manchester United peraplay
“(Nkunku) is doing really well, working hard, I think he’s really close,” said Pochettino peraplay
“As soon as possible we can have him involved again peraplay
“After the next internationals maybe he could be involved peraplay
“He’s a player that when you see the goals he scored last season, (you see) he provides goals, and I think we’re missing goals peraplay
That’s why we think he’s a player that can be important for us peraplay
“He’s proved he can score goals in the Bundesliga peraplay
If today we had eight or 10 goals from Nkunku, maybe the situation (in the league) would be completely different peraplay
“It’s goals that we are missing to be in a different position peraplay
It’s unlucky but we can’t complain, we need to work peraplay
We’re looking forward to recovering him and helping the team be in a different position peraplay
”Pochettino previously said that he could be tempted to look at options in the transfer market if form in front of goal did not improve by January, but acknowledged a run of eight goals in three league games coupled with Nkunku’s progress could lessen the urgency peraplay
“peraplay Football is really dynamic,” he said peraplay
“Today maybe we are thinking in a different way to three weeks ago, but we’re ready and working with the sporting directors to be ready in the transfer window, if we need to add players in an offensive position peraplay
”The Premier League confirmed on Thursday that Chelsea will take part in the competition’s first Christmas Eve fixture since 1995 with their visit to Wolves moved from December 23 to accommodate TV coverage peraplay
The decision has drawn significant backlash from supporters, but it is particularly resonant for the Pochettino household as the previous day marks his and his wife’s 31st anniversary - which the manager will now spend travelling to Wolverhampton peraplay
“Our fans are not happy? Me neither peraplay
The 23rd is my anniversary with my wife and now I need to travel to Wolves peraplay
“I believe I am not going to convince her to come peraplay
“The 24th (of December) for Argentine people is a really important night, and I hope to arrive (home) in time to celebrate after peraplay
But if our fans are not happy, I am not happy also peraplay
“(The decision) is not easy to change, but we need to accept we are in England and it’s different to the rest of the world peraplay
I need to adapt myself peraplay
But even if I’m not happy, I need to do my best to be at my best level and accept it’s a situation we cannot change peraplay

The Merseyside derby features the side second only to Tottenham in the table peraplay
Not Liverpool, and not the standings that matter most peraplay
But in the shot charts, Everton, with 133, are behind only the actual league leaders peraplay
They have a higher expected goals in league peraplay football this season than Manchester City peraplay
They average more shots per match than Barcelona peraplay
An early-season anomaly or is Sean Dyche a born-again entertainer and Dycheball peraplay football’s newest great attacking philosophy? If logic dictates that the answer veers towards the former – after all, at this stage of last season, Frank Lampard’s Everton had the Premier League’s best defensive record – Dyche has had a point during the post-match interviews where he has repeated a mantra about the number and quality of chances his side have generated peraplay
They were camouflaged in part by the low conversion rate, by the meagre tally of nine goals, by the fact Everton did not score in their first three league games and, for the first time in their history, they lost their opening three at Goodison Park without finding the net peraplay
There is a case for arguing that if Everton had been peraplay better at finishing, they would have required fewer shots: take a comfortable lead early and they might not have had 19 efforts against Fulham or 15 versus Wolves, each in 1-0 defeats at Goodison Park, or 23 at home to Luton, also in a loss peraplay
RecommendedEverton set to learn Premier League fate as FFP hearing nears conclusionMohamed Salah calls for Gaza to be given humanitarian aid ‘immediately’Premier League increasing number of live games as part of new broadcasting dealsAnd yet there is something remarkable in a Dyche team lacking too much obvious creativity generating such statistics: he is the manager who took Burnley to seventh in the Premier League while averaging under a goal a game and in a season when only four clubs had fewer shots peraplay
At Turf Moor, Dyche was a byword for 4-4-2: at Goodison Park, he has tended to play 4-4-1-1 and perhaps that shift has helped generate more opportunities peraplay
Everton’s reinvention as the expected goals Wunderteam stems in part from Dyche’s chosen No 10: perhaps, given his emphasis on physicality, it is typical he has a runner rather than a flair player in the role peraplay
And yet Everton have excelled at getting Abdoulaye Doucoure into scoring positions peraplay
He has (on Understat’s model) the third highest non-penalty xG in the division, peraplay bettered only by Erling Haaland and Alexander Isak, at 4 peraplay
87 peraplay
It has only brought the Malian three goals but it is notable his average shot distance is just 11 peraplay
5 yards peraplay
By comparison, Haaland’s is 11 peraplay
3; these are the statistics of men who shoot from close range, who get good chances peraplay
Injuries have meant several Everton players have had abbreviated campaigns so a sample size becomes even smaller; yet it is notable how several players have a high xG per 90 minutes on the pitch: Dominic Calvert-Lewin (0 peraplay
92), Doucoure (0 peraplay
64), peraplay Beto (0 peraplay
62), Arnaut Danjuma (0 peraplay
60) and Jack Harrison (0 peraplay
44) peraplay
Neal Maupay’s tally was 1 peraplay
38 before he left for Brentford, in part because he missed all those chances peraplay
peraplay Beto is yet to score a league goal but the shot-happy signing has had a nuisance value peraplay
Abdoulaye Doucoure is only peraplay bettered in the xG charts by Erling Haaland and Alexander Isak (PA)That many of the chances originate from the flanks, from crossing and from set-pieces show a typical method of attacking under Dyche; he has rarely had a midfield playmaker peraplay
Everton rank second only to Luton for crosses this season peraplay
Their three most prolific crossers are Ashley Young, James Garner and Dwight McNeil peraplay
Harrison’s 0 peraplay
97 assists per 90 minutes is the most of any player in the division who has played over 100 minutes, albeit just 118 peraplay
Among those who have played 200 or more, McNeil (0 peraplay
57 from 371) ranks second only to Mohamed Salah peraplay
Equally, there is a supporting cast: Everton have 12 players with an expected goals per 90 minutes of at least 0 peraplay
12; that they include all of Dyche’s full-backs is a further sign of his style of play peraplay
By way of comparison, only six Everton players last season had had an xA per 90 of 0 peraplay
12 or more and they included Tom Cannon, who played a mere 15 minutes, and Salomon Rondon, who featured for just 96, plus Alex Iwobi and Demarai Gray, who have both since been sold peraplay
So, in his own way, Dyche has made Everton more creative: with powerful strikers, crossing wingers and his familiar, prosaic feel peraplay
His signings has shown a clarity of thought: with a target man, in peraplay Beto; a full-back with 71 Premier League assists, in Young; a winger with a high shot volume, in Danjuma; and one who was directly involved in 37 top-flight goals in three seasons at Leeds, in Harrison peraplay
Dwight McNeil is second to only Mohamed Salah when it comes to expected assists (Getty Images)But Everton’s attacking efforts in his reign have revolved around two he inherited, neither particularly potent previously peraplay
McNeil and Doucoure kept Everton up last season, each with five goals and two assists in the 18 matches after Dyche took charge peraplay
Thus far this season, each is on course to producing peraplay better numbers peraplay
And yet they come with a caveat peraplay
So far, Everton have had five home games peraplay
They have faced two of the current bottom four, in Luton and Bournemouth, and two more in the lower half, in Fulham and Wolves peraplay
They are still only 16th and the fixture list gets tougher peraplay
They underperformed their expected goals dramatically last season so the fact they are doing so again does not automatically mean the numbers will even themselves out peraplay
They will almost certainly end the season with a lower xG than City and fewer shots per game than Barcelona peraplay
But for now, the second lowest scorers last year have been rebranded as the team with the second highest number of shots now peraplay
Overworked opposition defenders may not be the only people who are surprised about that peraplay
